Can You Drink Tap Water in Helsinki?
Free, and genuinely fine
This is one of the few questions about Finland with a flat answer. The water out of the tap is good, it is the same in a restaurant as in a public building, and asking for it carries no social penalty. In a city where eating out is expensive, that is a small structural saving repeated at every meal, and it is one of the few things here that costs you nothing at all.
Carry a refillable bottle and fill it anywhere. I have never seen anyone refused.

Operators handle it for you. Why visitors ask at all
The question comes up because Helsinki is expensive and people assume the free thing must be the worse thing. Here it is not. The water is the same water, whichever tap it comes out of, and buying bottles is paying for nothing at all. I was asked this at the counter several times a week for six winters, always by someone who looked relieved to hear the answer.
