The five that work
Rye bread first. The dried ring keeps for a long time, which was the point of the hole, and it is the one item that tells someone at home what Finland tastes like. Salmiakki next, in a small bag rather than a large one, because half of all recipients quietly do not finish it. The blue-wrapped milk chocolate bar is the national one and needs no explaining. Cloudberry jam is the amber bog berry that goes with squeaky cheese, and it is the most Finnish jar in the shop. Coffee, because the light roast here is not what most countries sell.
What I would leave: leipäjuusto, which is fresh and wants eating warm, here, today. And cured fish, unless you are flying home the same afternoon.
Where to buy it
Supermarkets are perfectly good for chocolate, coffee and salmiakki, and nobody should feel they have failed by using one. The Old Market Hall, open since 1889 on the Market Square waterfront, is better for the bread, the jam and anything cut to order. Hakaniemi’s hall, 1914 and reopened in 2023, is the plainer one where people who live here shop, and its page explains what that changes.
On Market Square, the orange tents are mostly souvenirs rather than food. Know which stall you are standing at before you commit.
Buy the perishable things on your last morning and the dry things whenever. A wrapped chocolate bar does not care how long you carry it; a round of fresh cheese very much does.
