Do You Tip in Finland?
What this looks like from behind a counter
I spent six winters on the fish counter at Hakaniemi and the tipping question came at me perhaps twice a season, always from visitors, always with the same slightly embarrassed face. The honest answer is that the transaction is finished when you have paid. Nobody is doing sums about you afterwards. If the service was good, saying so is worth more here than coins, and it is what Finns do.
The same holds in a restaurant. There is no line to fill in, no percentage anyone has in mind, and no second glance if the change stays where it is. That is part of why Helsinki menus read the way they do — the number you see is the number, which is one of the few things working in your favour on an expensive eating city.

Every listing I cover here says the same thing in its own words: gratuities are not included. That is a statement about what you have paid for, not a hint about what you owe. The guide is paid by the operator. If three hours of somebody ordering unfamiliar food for you in a language you don’t read felt worth something extra, give it — and if it didn’t, say nothing and walk off with a clear conscience. Is it rude not to tip in Finland?
Not at all. Finns mostly do not tip each other, and staff do not expect it from visitors either. Service is part of what you are charged. If you want to mark good service, saying so plainly is the local form — see the language page.

Do taxis and cafes expect a tip?
